STOWE, VT — The von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort is proud to announce its inclusion on the prestigious 2026 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America® Most Magnificent Gardens List, recognizing some of the most extraordinary historic hotel gardens across the United States. The annual list, curated by Historic Hotels of America®, celebrates properties whose gardens provide exceptional beauty, historical significance, and memorable guest experiences.
Nestled on 2,600 acres in Vermont’s Green Mountains, the gardens at the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort are a living reflection of the family’s Austrian heritage and enduring connection to the land. Originally designed by Maria von Trapp when the family established the lodge in 1950, the gardens feature winding pathways, alpine-inspired plantings, colorful flower terraces, and thoughtfully maintained spaces that have welcomed generations of visitors. Historic Hotels of America highlighted the property’s cutting garden, vegetable gardens, pollinator-friendly plantings, and the family cemetery gardens as key elements that make the landscape uniquely meaningful and beautiful.

“We are honored to be recognized among the nation’s most magnificent historic hotel gardens,” said Kristina von Trapp. “Our gardens have always been an important part of the guest experience and a reflection of the values that my grandmother instilled in the property—beauty, stewardship, and a deep appreciation for nature. This recognition celebrates the dedication of our grounds and gardening teams who work tirelessly to preserve and enhance these special spaces. We are proud of our gardens team, headed by Stephanie Locke, for helping us make this amazing list.”
The gardens continue to play an important role in the resort’s daily operations and guest experience. Fresh flowers from the cutting garden are used throughout the lodge, while produce, herbs, and microgreens from the property’s extensive vegetable gardens are incorporated into culinary offerings. Guests are invited to stroll the pathways, relax by the frog pond, enjoy the gazebo and pergola areas, and experience the peaceful setting that has become a hallmark of the resort.
The recognition comes just two years after the resort’s induction into Historic Hotels of America, further highlighting the property’s commitment to preserving its history while creating memorable experiences for guests from around the world.
